Students, families, and friends attended the Mass of the Holy Spirit at the Jesuit sponsored Nativity School of Worcester celebrated by Provincial of New England, Fr. Myles Sheehan, SJ, on September 5.

Part of the school’s tradition includes naming each incoming class after a Jesuit role model. The students of that class year keep that name until they graduate from Nativity Worcester.  The incoming fifth graders of the Class of 2017 will be known as “Ikunza” after Fr. Ignatius Ikunza Ayieko, SJ.  Fr. Ikunza worked for social justice in Kenya and is buried at Campion Center in Weston, Mass., after passing away during a trip to Boston.

Jesuits from East Africa, studying at Boston College School of Theology and Ministry,  attended the Mass, shared their reflections about Fr. Ikunza, and gave each student a prayer card.

The Mass was accompanied by music by Paul Melley,

The Mass of the Holy Spirit is one of the oldest traditions observed by the Society of Jesus, and serves as an invocation of the Holy Spirit to assist all members of  the school in their pursuit of knowledge and wisdom.

With the opening of this school year, Nativity School of Worcester is also celebrating its 10th anniversary.  The school will be celebrating their 10th anniversary gala on October 19.
